Nüwa is the Creator in Chinese mythology. She is portrayed as a female upper body with a snake-tailed lower body. In traditional culture, this represents strong fertility and symbolizes new life and future. In the most familiar story, Nüwa first used soil to shape the figure of a human, and blew it a breath to bring it alive, then she held muddy wicker and waved it into the air. The mud spots splashed on the ground are imitated into countless individuals of the original figure. This most sacred ability to create life is constantly praised and worshipped by descendants.
This piece was made during the home isolation period of the 2020 pandemic. In that special time of sorrow and parting. I record the remains of the reborn of life by refining the shape and structure of the snake slough. To express that yesterday cannot be redeemed, but hope and the future have been born out of grief. The process of growth can’t be materialized, but a slough could prove a snake growth, like the pandemic that leaves a scar but meanwhile open a new life, the image of Nüwa and snake map to nowadays’ society across thousands of years history.
